Roxana Street Department

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Roxana Street Department is to provide quality service to our residents. The Street Department is responsible for refuse collection, temporary dumpster service, large-item collection, snow removal, street, and sidewalk repair, street sweeping, mosquito control, animal control, stormwater system, storm cleanup, leaf collection, street signage, and maintenance of village properties. The Village of Roxana employs 5 full-time Street Department workers.

Street Department Services:

Refuse must be bagged, inside a container, and under control so that the elements of nature or animals may not scatter it. It is unlawful for any person to bring refuse into the village for the purpose of placing those objects for disposal by the Village. Containers must be approved by the Street Department. Trash collection days are Tuesdays and Thursdays for residents in most of the village. Residences and businesses located on Cemetery, Wasman, Wagon Wheel, Hedge, Wanda, Canal, Industrial, and Barton roads will have trash collected on Fridays.

In the event that a holiday would fall on a trash collection day, pickup will be the previous day. The Village observes the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

For a missed refuse pickup or questions about refuse service, please call the Street Department Office at (618) 254-1951.

Republic Services is contracted to remove recycling for the citizens of Roxana. For a missed recycling pickup or questions related to recycling services, please call Republic Services at (618) 656-6883.

Please place all yard waste and grass clippings into biodegradable yard waste bags and place them in your normal trash collection area. Grass clippings that are not bagged will not be collected.

If a resident has a large quantity of refuse, they may contact the Village to request a temporary dumpster to be placed at their residence. This service is free, for village residents only, and is intended for spring cleaning, light remodeling, or other small jobs that would result in a large pile of refuse being placed in the normal refuse collection area.

Dumpsters can be scheduled for 3-7 business days, and are dumped every morning on business days. We do ask that after requesting the service, a resident wait 30 days before requesting another dumpster. This is to keep wait times for the service at a minimum. The dumpsters are of the smaller “2-yard” size. Concrete, tires, electronics, and chemicals are not to be placed in the dumpsters. Residents wishing to dispose of more material than can be disposed of in 3-7 days are asked to contact a dumpster rental service at their expense.

To schedule a dumpster delivery call either the Street Department Office at (618) 254-1951 or Village Hall at (618)254-0345.

The Village of Roxana, unlike many municipalities, does routinely pick up large items. Please place all large items near your normal trash collection area and call the Street Department Office at (618) 254-1951 to schedule a pickup. We use heavy equipment to pick up large items, so items not placed in the trash collection area will not be collected.

Please try to remove vehicles from the roadways during a snow event when possible so that the street can be cleaned curb to curb. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle being buried during heavy snowfalls. It is suggested that residents wait until the streets have been cleared of snow before clearing their driveways. Failure to do so may result in the driveway approach being reburied.

The Village provides snow removal from the driveways of elderly and handicapped citizens. To be considered for this program, please contact Village Hall at (618) 254-0345. However, please note that this service will not be provided until after the streets have been completely cleared.

Contact the Street Department Office at (618) 254-1951 for any animal-related issues such as stray cats or dogs. The Street Department hours are Monday – Friday from 7 AM to 3:30 PM. If it is after hours or an emergency, such as a bite case, contact the Police Department at (618) 254-1945.

The Village of Roxana participates in the Madison County MS4 program. We operate separate sanitary, sewer, and stormwater collection systems. Please do not blow or place your grass clippings or other yard waste in the roadway. During a rain event they can flow down the gutters and block drains intended for rainwater. This can cause drains to become clogged, roads to flood, and, in extreme cases, flood damage to property.

The Street Department operates a leaf collection program beginning Oct. 1st and ending Dec. 31st (weather permitting). During these dates, if residents have any leaves they would like collected, please place them either near your normal trash collection area or in the grass between the sidewalk and the street in front of the residence. Please do not place the leaves in the gutters or streets as they can be washed away by rain and clog our stormwater system. Leaves are collected with heavy equipment and may not be collected if located too close to a building, vehicle, or another obstacle.
